In the latest instalment of our MyTCM series, we spoke with Gareth Thomas of the Invictus Sixth Form Football Academy in the West Midlands, UK.
Gareth said: "At Invictus, we are currently working with 16 years old+, my aim is to develop the academy to work through the age groups- starting with grassroots working through the Youth Development Phase."
Gareth began coaching in 2000 while on a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) at a local club.
He said: "I enjoyed it so much it got me interested in teaching. I have been a teacher for 16 years now and have held all positions from teacher to head of PE.
I have still coaches throughout this time, mainly in the schools district and county sides.
I started the sixth form academy, where I work with an ex-professional footballer. I'm constantly looking for ways to develop through coaching courses and webinars.
"I've been using The Coaching Manual for around five years now, I heard about it through social media. It has absolutely helped me improve as a coach - it has given me so many ideas and tips."
It's not just The Coaching Manual's concepts and tips that Gareth has found value in, as he recently completed the TCM Certificate - Level 1 course.
He said: "TCM Certificate Level 1 has brought things out in me that I hadn't used before, and I am noticing my players using the terminology I am using from the course. I have really enjoyed it. Thank you so much for the course that you have put on - it has been a brilliant 10 weeks!
"The Coaching Manual has been a brilliant help during this time. Where the grass training has mainly stopped, to be able to use the time to update/upskill, and reset ideas has been invaluable."
And thank you for taking part, Gareth!
