Welcome to the first TCM Focus, where we take a look at a goal or move from the last week of football, and analyse the training and techniques required to put a plan into action on the pitch. This week we are taking a look at Bruno Fernandes's counter-attacking goal versus Newcastle United at St James's Park on Saturday (17th October).
The goal

Newcastle United's Jonjo Shelvey crosses a free kick into the Manchester United penalty area, but the ball is cleared by the head of Harry Maguire, who anticipates the far post delivery. Maguire directs the ball into open space outside his penalty area, towards midfielder Donny van de Beek.

The Dutchman picks the ball up and rides the challenge of Jonjo Shelvey, taking the ball out wide halfway inside his own half. He then plays a one-two with Bruno Fernandes to get away from Newcastle midfielder Ryan Fraser, before playing the ball inside to Juan Mata on the edge of the centre circle. Fernandes and Rashford continue running down the left hand side into space, providing Mata with first-time pass options.

Newcastle United track back in numbers, but due to Rashford's speed he is able to take the ball forward and into the opposition penalty area as he awaits and anticipates the supporting movement from his teammates. He holds the ball up as Bruno Fernandes continues his overlapping run into the area.

Rashford lays the ball off to Fernandes just as he approaches the line of defence, and the unmarked Portuguese takes a touch into his path, and beats the oncoming Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow with a shot across goal into the far corner.
What attributes are on display here?
In this quick phase of play, one- and two-touch passes are key. The ball must be moved forward with the intention of approaching the attacking third before the opposing team are able to retreat and regroup. Quick decision-making must accompany technical competency in order to progress the play efficiently in this way.
The notable physical attribute being displayed by a number of players involved in the goal is sprint speed. Players off the ball must sprint into space before their opponents have time to track back into shape, and players on the ball (most notably Marcus Rashford in this example) must be able to bring the ball forward quickly when running into space in possession.
Make sure your players have the ability to execute movements like the ones on display in this example, by including the following techniques in your TopTekkers development plans:
- 18 yard sprint
- Running with the ball
- One touch pass
- Driven pass
- Two touch finishing
